This new design build cogeneration facility was installed by Zenith to replace an antiquated coal fired steam boiler plant. The new facility consists of one 3.2 MW/5kV turbine, two 1.6 MW/5kV generators and one 500 kW/5kV steam powered generator. The turbine and generators are powered by waste methane gas obtained from a nearby landfill facility. The cogeneration facility uses a heat recovery system that generates enough steam to accommodate the correctional facility’s needs for heating, cooking, cleaning, and laundry.
The turbine and generators provide all the power requirements for the correctional institution and when surplus power is available, this power is exported back into the utility grid and serves as a revenue source.
Zenith Systems ability to work seamlessly with the construction team to facilitate a utility interconnect agreement between the Correctional Institution and the local electrical company provided the pathway for a successful project completed on time and within budget.
